Synopsis

The Apothecary Diaries" (Japanese: 薬屋のひとりごと, "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto") is a Japanese light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The story is set in a fictional country inspired by Imperial China during the Tang dynasty and follows Maomao, a young apothecary from the red-light district. After being kidnapped and sold into servitude at the emperor's palace, she conceals her extensive knowledge of medicine to avoid drawing attention. However, when the emperor's children fall ill under mysterious circumstances, Maomao's curiosity compels her to investigate. Her discreet interventions catch the eye of Jinshi, a perceptive and attractive eunuch, who assigns her to serve the emperor's favored concubine, Gyokuyou. This new role entangles Maomao in various medical cases and intrigues within the imperial court.
